What is an IBA?

International Building Exhibitions (IBAs) are unique vehicles for urban and regional development. IBAs are known for their transformative power and openness to experimentation. Over a period of ten years, innovative approaches and forward-looking solutions to urban and regional challenges are rethought, tested and showcased to the public. IBAs have existed in Germany for over a hundred years.

We’re moving our region forward

Our mission? To set people and ideas in motion. Over the next ten years, together with government, local authorities, business, academia and civil society, we aim to establish the Munich Metropolitan Region as an international leader in future-ready, liveable and multimodal mobility with a strong focus on design quality.

We aim to foster a culture of mobility that brings social, environmental, economic and technological considerations into harmony, enhances quality of life across both urban and rural areas, and strengthens trust-based collaboration beyond municipal boundaries.

Experimentation

We inspire enthusiasm for the future. As a catalyst for innovation, excellence and collaboration, we help develop project ideas and empower people to shape the future of the region. We create an environment where courage, creativity and mutual learning can flourish. Together, we develop ideas, forge new paths and ultimately uncover solutions that drive meaningful change.

Stage

We give the future a stage. We aim to showcase the innovative potential of our region. We seek out pioneering, exemplary and regionally relevant solutions and give them a platform across the region and beyond. Together, we create spaces that bring the future within reach.

Network

Major change is only possible if we work together! We connect people, ideas and projects to develop practical solutions locally and to turn them into reality. IBA-M is a network of cities and municipalities across the region that are committed to taking responsibility. Together, we help drive the future of mobility, creating a better quality of life for people across the region and beyond.

The governing members

The governing members are the City of Munich, the cities of Augsburg and Ingolstadt, the districts of Munich and Freising, and the European Metropolitan Region Munich Association (EMM e.V.).

Are you interested in becoming a member?

Participation is possible either directly as a governing member (limited to districts and independent cities with certain financial contributions) or indirectly through EMM e.V. via its dedicated IBA Unit. Through this IBA Unit, chambers of commerce, municipalities and stakeholders from business and academia can actively participate.

The Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board makes the key strategic decisions for the IBA-M GmbH. Its chair rotates regularly between the City of Munich and the other shareholders, as set out in the statutes.
