Description

The Donnersbergerbrücke, one of the busiest inner-city bridges in Europe, is to be completely renewed by the 2040s while maintaining operations both on and beneath the bridge. This major urban-planning, transport, logistical and engineering challenge requires an integrated approach. The project begins before construction starts: an innovative, participatory and integrated planning process is intended to ensure that the modernisation serves as a catalyst for urban transformation. The bridge is not only to remain a transport corridor, but also to become a landmark and multifunctional urban space that connects the surrounding neighbourhoods and creates a shared space for the future.

More than just a bridge

Opened in 1935 and continuously expanded over the decades, the bridge is to become an urban landmark and an attractive space for mobility. The existing car-oriented infrastructure will be transformed into a multimodal transport system for cars, public transport, cyclists and pedestrians, with improved connections to the S-Bahn and regional rail services. On, beneath and alongside the bridge, new urban spaces will be created with green areas, recreational facilities and places where people can spend time. Noise-protection and climate-adaptation measures, together with accessible routes, complete the concept. In this way, the new bridge could become an icon of modern engineering and forward-looking urban design.

International impact through cooperation 

The project adopts an innovative and participatory planning approach for the replacement bridge. Together with civil society, experts and other stakeholders, solutions are being developed for urban improvements, architectural quality, noise protection and climate adaptation. New ideas will be explored, unused spaces temporarily activated and alternative uses tested collaboratively.
