A neighbourhood where walking and cycling are the preferred ways to get around. That is the vision for Klimaquartier Ramersdorf: a place that puts people and their mobility first.
Mobility designed for people
There are currently 916 residential units owned by Münchner Wohnen in Klimaquartier Ramersdorf. More are to be added through extensions and additional storeys. An innovative, climate-conscious mobility concept is showing the way – closely integrated with the wider planning for the neighbourhood. But how do you best create a residential neighbourhood that encourages people to choose climate-friendly ways of getting around? That is the question that Münchner Wohnen aims to answer – working in collaboration with local residents.
At the heart of the plans are the future needs of local people. Walking and cycling routes are to be improved, local amenities strengthened, and attractive communal and green spaces created. Over a period of 10 to 15 years, the number of parking spaces per home will gradually be reduced as new homes are built. In addition to these changes, new mobility options will be introduced and tested, including car sharing, rental bikes, electric cargo bikes, bicycle repair stations and parcel collection points. The aim is to make climate-friendly mobility convenient, simple, affordable and available to all.
Change begins in the collective mind
For this vision to become reality, developers, local authorities and residents will need to be open to new ways of doing things. And that makes good communication vital. The idea is for changes to be developed collaboratively rather than imposed from above. Participatory initiatives invite people in the community to contribute their own ideas and play an active role in shaping its mobility future. The whole process is to be supported by academic partners from Munich University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Munich, as well as a regeneration management team commissioned by the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations.
Paving the way for the future of living
In this way, Klimaquartier Ramersdorf will serve as a living lab for the residential neighbourhoods of the future – particularly in how policymakers, local authorities, developers and planners can collaborate from the outset to explore new legal avenues for change. Any lessons learned from the project can be applied to other neighbourhoods in Munich and the surrounding region. Additionally, the scope of the project means it will contribute not only to Munich’s climate goals, but also to the creation of new housing.
