Augsburg’s Water Management System is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and internationally one of a kind. Dating back to the 13th century, it has stood for technological innovation and sustainability ever since. This project aims to connect the 22 decentralised World Heritage sites through a sustainable intermodal mobility network, making them more accessible, more visible and easier to experience. Other green and water corridors will also benefit from the initiative. Access to the city’s waterways will also be improved.
Preserving our cultural heritage for the future
At the heart of the project is the further development of Augsburg’s water culture, centred on the rivers Lech and Wertach and the city’s many streams. New routes and information points will connect places of interest, waterways and urban spaces while bringing the UNESCO sites closer to residents and visitors alike. The digital and physical city will be connected for both visitors and local residents. A mobility concept will improve intermodal connections between the 22 World Heritage sites and combine everyday and tourism mobility with public transport options. A digital platform will provide background information, route recommendations and interactive features.
Connecting the wider region
To further strengthen connectivity, options are being explored for new pedestrian and cycling crossings over the Lech, both within Augsburg and between the city and the surrounding region. These could become part of a larger discovery route through the water landscape – a symbol of the coming together of previously separate green spaces, sustainability and regional cooperation. Nature conservation, ecological considerations, architectural quality and engineering excellence are at the heart of the project.
