Why shouldn’t you be able to live right next to a station, with all its mobility options, and also just a few steps from the River Isar? With the Zukunftsquartier (“future quarter”), the City of Freising is addressing multiple challenges of the future. This sees a new district being planned around the station, using an innovative and collaborative approach that brings mobility and landscape together.
At the heart of the project is the idea of combining the reorganisation of transport links with the development of a vibrant new urban district. Together with a wide range of stakeholders, discussions have explored how neighbourhoods can be designed to organise land use and mobility in ways that make everyday destinations climate-friendly and accessible to everyone.
The Zukunftsquartier will connect Freising’s historic old town with the Lerchenfeld district across the River Isar and create new access to the riverbanks as a natural and recreational space. At the same time, the district is being designed as a low-car neighbourhood, offering short distances to shops, workplaces, childcare facilities, leisure activities and recreational areas.
A station for everyone
The development of the station area into a multimodal transport hub will make mobility easier, more convenient and more sustainable. Well-integrated mobility services will make it easier to switch between rail, bus, cycling and walking, making it even more attractive to travel throughout the city and region without a car.
As a result, the station area will become a vibrant, mixed-use and accessible hub for climate-friendly mobility and social participation, creating added value for the entire region.
