The future of sustainable mobility relies heavily on rail transport. To develop station buildings in a resource-efficient way, Deutsche Bahn has created a concept for small and medium-sized stations that combines renewable building materials with networked mobility services. In Kaufbeuren, this concept, currently known under the working title Green Station, will be combined with the existing station building for the first time. The experience gained from combining existing structures, modular expansion and networked mobility will serve as a transferable model for other stations across the region.
Climate friendly
The existing station building will be partially dismantled, refurbished in a resource-efficient manner and complemented by a timber roof structure. Photovoltaics, green roofs and heat pumps will make operations significantly more climate-friendly in the future. Reusable materials, modular construction methods and renewable energy sources will reduce CO2 emissions from the outset. The station forecourt will also be enhanced through climate-regulating measures.
Good for the neighbourhood and the wider region
The project aims not only to deliver ecological benefits, but also to create added value for the city and the wider region. The new station will become an attractive public space for travellers and local residents alike. A planned transparent waiting hall will open towards the city and create space for social interaction. In this way, the station and the surrounding neighbourhood will come together to form a functional, welcoming and identity-shaping place. The findings will feed into the further development of sustainable station buildings and can be implemented at other locations across the Munich Metropolitan Region.
