Andrea Degl is a true ‘Muenchner Kindl’, having received her law degree in Munich and subsequently worked as a judge at the Munich Administrative Court. She worked for many years in various ministries in the State Chancellery in Munich and Berlin, including as Vice-President of the Upper Bavarian Government, manager of both the Department for Political Policy Issues, and the State Building Construction at the Bavarian Ministry of Construction. Since 2021, Andrea Degl has been Executive Member of the Presidium at the Bavarian County Council, where she represents the interests of the 71 Bavarian counties.

How would you describe your vision for the ‘‘Spaces of Mobility’’ for the Munich Metropolitan Region in 2034 in three words?
Added value – ‘‘Spaces of Mobility’’ must serve people’s needs and deliver tangible benefits.
Feasibility – ‘‘Spaces of Mobility’’ have to be viable and work in practice: solutions, not pipe dreams.
Tailored to specific needs – ‘‘Spaces of Mobility’’ need to fit the specific needs of different metropolitan regions, i.e. adequately address the needs of both urban and rural areas.
What do you see as the biggest mobility challenge facing the Munich Metropolitan Region?
Munich’s metropolitan region is expanding. The ever-growing number of people who live and work here, pursue their hobbies and meet friends have diverse mobility needs. The mobility transition and mobility services tailored to people’s needs require solutions built on a broader foundation than the lowest common denominator of all stakeholders.
What motivated you to get involved in the IBA-M?
The first ideas for the IBA Munich Metropolitan Region accompanied me during my time at the Bavarian Ministry of Construction. I now have the opportunity to build on the work and ideas I had then, and to connect them with the challenges facing districts across the metropolitan region today: creating mobility that is affordable, sustainable and tailored to people’s needs.
What unique perspective or expertise do you bring to the IBA-M?
Above anything else, I provide a practical perspective: I will only support ideas that are financially feasible, practical and easy to implement.
For me, the IBA is…
…a fantastic space for experimentation that will hopefully deliver the greatest possible practical benefit.
